Canada Welcomes Newcomers with Better Career Opportunities and Higher Salaries

Statistics Canada’s latest report highlights better pay and jobs for new immigrants. The report is a welcome development in a world where immigrants are seen as clogs whereas it is a positive shift for immigrants in Canada, with increasing job prospects and improved earnings compared to previous years. While still trailing behind the Canadian-born population in terms of employment and income, recent immigrants are narrowing the gap significantly.

The report reveals a notable rise in the employment rate of recent immigrants aged 25 to 54, outpacing their Canadian-born counterparts since the early 2010s. Additionally, recent immigrants have experienced faster earnings growth, leading to a reduction in the income disparity between immigrants and Canadian-born workers.

With unemployment rates declining among recent immigrants, the gap between them and Canadian-born workers is steadily closing. Although recent immigrants still earn less on average, the gap in weekly earnings has notably decreased, marking a departure from previous stagnation and worsening trends.

However, uncertainties loom regarding the sustainability of these positive trends. The report suggests that the influx of new workers through immigration programs may outpace job growth in the near future, potentially impacting the continued improvement of immigrant employment and income outcomes.
