Express Entry Update 2026: New Category-Based Draw Rules You Must Know

Canada has expanded its Express Entry category-based draws, creating new opportunities for skilled workers to receive invitations for permanent residence (PR).

Under the updated system, candidates who fall within targeted occupation and experience categories now have a stronger chance of being selected—even if their CRS score is not the highest in the general pool.

What Are Category-Based Draws?

Category-based selection allows Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to invite candidates with skills that match Canada’s labour market needs.

There are currently ten Express Entry categories, including three that specifically require Canadian work experience:

  • Physicians with Canadian work experience
  • Senior managers with Canadian work experience
  • Researchers with Canadian work experience
  • Skilled military recruits*
  • Healthcare and social services occupations
  • Education occupations
  • Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) occupations
  • Trade occupations
  • Transport occupations
  • Strong French-language proficiency

These targeted draws increase the chances of invitation for candidates working in high-demand sectors.
