Do You Have Canadian Roots? You May Already Be a Citizen
If you have a Canadian parent or grandparent, a major change in Canadian law could mean that you are already entitled to Canadian citizenship—even if you were born outside Canada.
For years, many families were told that Canadian citizenship did not pass down if a parent was also born abroad. As a result, countless people assumed their chance at a Canadian passport was permanently lost.
That assumption is no longer true.

As of December 2025, a new law—Bill C-3—has officially changed the rules. Citizenship is no longer limited by where your Canadian parent was born. Whether your parent was born in Canada or abroad, family connection now matters more than place of birth.
If you can prove a direct Canadian lineage, you may already qualify for:
- Canadian citizenship
- A Canadian passport
- The right to live, work, and study in Canada
Many people who never applied before are now discovering they were citizens all along.
