Changes to Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) Eligibility Coming Soon

Canada plans to reduce Spousal Open Work Permits (SOWPs) by over 100,000 within the next three years, affecting spouses of students in select master’s, doctoral, and professional programs. Spouses of master’s students will only be eligible for work permits if their program is at least 16 months long.

This change follows the earlier decision to limit SOWPs to specific academic programs and reserve a portion of study permits for master’s and PhD students by 2025.
